Real Madrid legend Luka Modric’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and club's management has made its decision regarding the Croatian's future, reported The Athletic on Tuesday.
Modric is widely considered the greatest midfielder to ever play for Madrid as the Croatian created unmatched history during his 11 years at the club and is still going strong as his cameos off the bench in the recent past have strengthened Los Blancos’ position at the summit of La Liga.
There had been rumours of the Croatian’s renewal but no formal talks took place and as per The Athletic, Los Blancos have no intentions of renewing the 38-year-old’s contract.
While he is rated highly and everyone inside the club speaks greatly of the Croatian, it is believed that his time with the team has come to an end.
Modric will turn 39 in September this year and his game time has been reduced greatly as the Croatian hasn't been a part of the starting XI and is often used as a substitute.
Madrid have opted to feature youngsters in the team as the midfield of Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham starts in almost every match which has turned Modric into a bench player.
Since Madrid are not willing to renew Modric’s contract, it is likely that Modric will head to the Saudi Pro League. He was offered a mega-money contract by a league side last summer but the Croatian declined.
He was also approached by top Turkish side Galatasaray recently but the midfielder turned the offer down as he is still evaluating his options for the next season.
As things stand, everything indicates the departure of one of Real Madrid’s greats, who 24 trophies with the club including five Champions League titles.
